Cidade Velha, Historic Centre of Ribeira Grande

The first European colonial outpost in the tropics, Ribeira Grande was renamed Cidade Velha in the late 18th century. The town retains some of its original street layout and the remains of a royal fortress and an ornate 16th century marble pillar in the Pillory Square.
